For staff new to teaching

Resources >> For staff new to teaching

Are you new to the study of teaching and learning in your discipline? If so then this page is for you.

This section of our website aims to provide a single access point to useful information for staff who are new to studying teaching and learning in the health care disciplines. The Subject Centre's primary aim is to support teaching in higher education to improve student learning in medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine. Please tell us how we could improve this website or better support you in your work. Contact us.

Professional recognition

It is important to bring the same level of professionalism to your teaching as to your clinical (or other professional) work and this should be appropriately recognised. One way in which you can gain this recognition is through the UK National Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Supporting Learning in HE (The UKPSF).

You may also wish to consider the option of applying to become a Member or Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators (AME).

We are supporting the Higher Education Academy's Professional Recognition Scheme by mapping all our activities against the recognition criteria. This should help you follow the individual recognition scheme to meet all the necessary criteria. Download MEDEV activities mapped against the Professional Standards Framework (PDF format).

Please note that if you are studying on a PG Cert or Certificate in Academic Practice programme at a University then this may be accredited by the Higher Education Academy. If this is the case then successfully completing your programme will automatically entitle you to become a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Check with your course tutor to see if this is so.
