New e-learning for Healthcare resource - e-VTE launched Venous thrombosis is a condition in which a blood clot (thrombus) forms in a vein. Blood flow through the affected vein can be limited by the clot, causing swelling and pain. Venous thrombosis most commonly occurs in the 'deep veins' in the legs, thighs, or pelvis. This is known as a deep vein thrombosis. An embolism is created if a part or all of the blood clot in the deep vein breaks off from the site where it is created and travels through the venous system. If the clot lodges in the lung a very serious condition, pulmonary embolism (PE), arises. Venous thrombosis can form in any part of the venous system. However, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and PE are the most common manifestations of venous thrombosis. DVT and PE are known as venous thromboembolism (VTE). e-VTE is an e-learning resource for Venous Thromboembolism developed by the Chief Medical Officer’s VTE Implementation Working Group (IWG) in partnership with e-Learning for Healthcare (e-LfH).

Dan Kurland's strategies for critical reading and writing To non-critical readers, many texts offer the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. To the critical reader, any single text provides but one portrayal of the facts, one individual's "take" on the subject. Criticalreading.com shows you how to recognize what a text says, what a text does, and what a text means by analyzing choices of content, language, and structure. It shows you what to look for, and how to think about what you find.

Using the web to encourage critical thinking 'Using the Wider Web to Encourage Critical Thinking' is a series of exercises designed for classroom or seminar use, aimed at sixth formers and first year undergraduates. The subject matter is of relevance to a range of humanities disciplines (most especially, though by no means limited to, philosophy and religious studies), while the research skills gained will be valuable to all students. Two units are currently available, the first focussing on checking facts, and the second on gauging and analysing popular opinion on a range of controversial issues. In both units, students are invited to explore the Web and find a number of sites which address the selected topic, and then, in a teacher-led group discussion, to share and discuss their findings. The Teacher's Guide includes suggested session outlines and discussion points, and worksheets and PowerPoint presentations are also supplied.

Philosophical and Religious Studies Subject Centre faith guides There is often a lack of understanding as to what a religion is, and what it means to be a member (or not) of a specific faith group. Confusion can result in all walks of life and higher education is not exempt from this. Indeed, institutions are increasingly, and with varying degrees and different levels of success, seeking to respond to and understand specific faith requirements, as they relate (or not) to particular areas of higher education, in continually changing contexts. This series of Faith Guides from the Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Philosophical and Religious Studies will not necessarily solve all the controversies or confusion, but may bring some answers to some of these basic questions, through providing individuals, departments, and institutions with resource information on issues relating to teaching people of faith in a higher education environment.
